With Qik, you can share with anyone and everyone what’s going on anywhere and everywhere you go. The technology is simple yet sophisticated, it uses the video camera on your phone to take live video and stream it on the internet on you own personal station. You can have friends view you qik.com page or simply take the video and post it onto Facebook yourself. This is great when you want to share a great moment with friends or relay breaking news.

The implications are mind boggling. Think of all the amazing experiences you can now share with the world weddings, graduations, birthdays can all be captured and shared with the world instantly. It add to the amazing features Google maps will show where the video is being stream from thanks to the GPS capabilities of the phones. This technology in the right hands can change our lives into a web documentary directed by us and starring all of our friends. However, I worry about the possible backlash to a technology that allows you to make “qik” judgments and post any video to the internet. Facebook had to put safeguards for its pictures because many interviewers where checking Facebook to see an applicants wild night of partying. This would reflect poorly on the person interviewed, so Facebook added a way to block Friends from seeing parts of your profile, now audio has been added. Nowing how the Facebook experiment turned out will hopefully encourage people to error on the side of good judgment. The Qik terms of service point out that it reserves the right to remove “material that is unlawful, obscene, defamatory, libelous, threatening, pornographic, harassing, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive, or encourages conduct that would be considered a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability, violate any law, or is otherwise inappropriate.” But they cannot due this instantly so there is room for any number of inappropriate things to surface.

Whatever, the pitfalls you can see the amazing possibilities that can come form this technology. One such advancement is already underway, a University of Maryland Professor is in the process of developing technology that will allow people to call 911 and stream video of the incident they are reporting. Dr. Ashok Agrawala believes that “v911” as he calls it will best serve as a deterrent. But you can see how this technology will change the way we function in the world.
